Chapter 17

Gracie ran outside when it started to rain and grabbed the sheets drying on the clothes line. Even after Thomas had splurged on a washer and dryer, Gracie preferred the fresh smell of line dried sheets. She pulled on the pillow case’s corner, causing the clothespins to dart upward like boomerangs. Leaning away, dodging their decent, she didn’t notice the car approaching.

When she heard the popping of gravel under the vehicle’s tires, she dashed toward the house, bundling the sheets in her arms. Since Barney’s visit, she’d been careful to take cover. The rain fell in large pellets, and the edges of the sheets dragged the ground. She recognized the car just before she stepped inside. She’d forgotten to pick up the mail at the post office, something her grandfather had always done.

After tossing the sheets on the back of the armchair, she jogged to unlatch the front yard gate. Mr. Foster insisted on carrying the stack of mail to the house for Gracie. He stuttered as he spoke, a habit he had had as long as she could remember. He mumbled concerned thoughts for Gracie’s grandfather but insisted she not disturb him. He headed back to his vehicle with his hand above his head to shelter his windblown combover from the drizzling rain.

Gracie sifted through the mail and found an assortment of Get-Well cards and a few bills. Then she noticed the return address on one letter. Although smudged, she could make out the words “Louisville, KY”. She tore it open, ripping the corner of the letter along with the envelope.

Kage’s words rushed in her head as she read quickly.
